In parallel to the preparations for the second swimming project organised together with the Venezuelan and Mexican patient organisation, the latest NNHF supported project ‘Marco Polo’ started off. By training 13 laboratory technicians and seven haematologists in coagulation testing, a solid basis is set to establish quality diagnosis on a national level.
Motivated by this two days training, participants from seven centres are enthusiastic about the benefits of such a development to come.
"Our job is now to establish the gained knowledge in our hospitals and to get support in applying it” says Maria, a participant.
"For us it was important that the participants understand their responsibility as representatives of their centres, in moving this process forward. To ensure alignment on a national level, we have set-up a system for regular reporting and close collaboration with the decision makers in each centre. Furthermore, the haematology laboratory specialist and I as haematologist will visit the centres to provide hands-on support”, says Dr Arlette de Saez, local project leader from the national blood bank. “This will help to achieve sustainable results”, she adds.
The activities are organised with the support of the Venezuelan Haemophilia Association (AVH)."This is only possible if we work together. I am sure we will get there", says Marion Enchaguacia, head of haematology laboratory in the national blood bank.In order to prepare the path for this next development step in Venezuela, previous activities supported by the NNHF, focussed on programmes enforcing the regional patient association, programmes training health care professionals in multidisciplinary care and educational workshops for patients and families.
